Leland Medical Clinic Becomes National Health Services Corps Site

Leland Medical Clinic (LMC), supported by Delta Health Alliance, was notified recently by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Health Workforce that it is now an officially designated National Health Service Corp (NHSC) site.  This designation will help LMC attract more primary care and mental health providers to the Mississippi Delta through the NHSC Loan Repayment Program.

Similar to other service corps organizations like Teach for America, the National Health Service Corp members are eligible to have student loans up to $75,000 eliminated by working in a medically underserved designated area for a minimum of two years and may reapply after the initial award. Eligibility to apply to become a NHSC member requires that health professionals be trained and licensed in their field of study.

According to Karen Matthews, CEO Delta Health Alliance, “Being a NHSC designated site allows us to appeal to providers who might not have considered practicing in the Delta.” Matthews continues that the partnership with HRSA is a winning one for Delta residents and health care providers.

Mississippi, particularly the Delta, has historically been a medically underserved area and programs like the National Health Service Corp will allow Leland Medical Clinic to secure primary and mental health providers as position openings become available.
